When Eilene Galloway was born, the Wright Brothers' historic flight was less than three years old. Now, as she turns 100, she can claim credit for helping to create the agency that landed humans on the moon and is planning to send them back.

Without valid pilot’s licenses, the Wright Brothers invented, flew and supplied the world with airplanes. Of course pilot’s licenses did not exist and would not be a requirement of aviation for many years. On June 29th, 1940 the Civil Aeronautics Authority felt a need to recognize the Wright’s success and issued Honorary Pilot Certificate Number 1 shown here to Orville Wright. Today, the certificate hangs on the wall in the Engineers Club of Dayton (Ohio.) This Club was founded by Col. Edward A. Deeds and Charles F. Kettering. Together they had developed the automotive self-starter which made autos functional to this day. As a Dayton resident and historic inventor, Orville Wright was the President of the Engineers Club in 1924-1925.

The Wright Brothers took the new machine to Kitty Hawk, NC in late August. They made several successful glides but soon discovered that the glider had a dangerous flaw. The new rudder didn't work. In fact the spinning problem, dubbed "well-digging," was getting worse. Almost every time Wilbur and Orville tried to turn, the glider would spin and crash. Then on the night of October 3, Orville had an idea.

A grand celebration to honor the 100th Anniversary of the Wright Brothers' historic event, including a week-long series of activities, was held December 17, 2003. Guests included President George W. Bush, John Travolta, Chuck Yeager, Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin and John Glenn. Due to poor weather conditions, an attempt to reenact the first powered flight was unsuccessful. Musical performances throughout the week featured Michelle Branch, The Beach Boys, The Temptations, Lee Greenwood and Aaron Tippin.
