The outpouring of opposition to the World Trade Organization has severely shaken the free-trade wing of the Democratic Party, threatened grass-roots union support for Al Gore's presidential campaign and potentially undermined the party's hopes of retaking the House. There were plenty of warnings that World Trade Organization demonstrations could bring trouble to Seattle. The "Battle in Seattle" T-shirts on sale a week before the meeting, for example, were certainly a clue. But maybe city officials could be excused for underestimating the size and power of the crowds.
