The World Trade Center was an American icon and has been featured in numerous films, as well as appearing in many television shows, cartoons, comic books, computer/video games and music videos. The Twin Towers have appeared in popular television shows such as Friends, Sex and the City, New York Undercover, NYPD Blue, the 1987 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, The Mr. Bill Show, The Simpsons and Family Guy. The Twin Towers have ... appeared prominently in popular films such as Three Days of the Condor, Escape From New York, Godspell, the 1976 King Kong, Gremlins 2: The New Batch, New Jack City, Home Alone 2: Lost in New York, Die Hard: With a Vengeance, Daylight, Sleepless in Seattle, The Wiz, Armageddon, Independence Day, Artificial Intelligence (A.I.), Crocodile Dundee and Crocodile Dundee II. The Towers have also been featured in music videos by popular musicians such as The Spice Girls, Madonna, Blondie, Linkin Park, Depeche Mode, and Ryan Adams.
The World Trade Center in New York City, designed by Minoru Yamasaki, was a complex of seven office buildings and an enormous underground shopping concourse. What made the World Trade Center famous is the two towers, the North Tower and the South Tower. Each had something to offer. The North Tower featured Windows on the World, an elegant restaurant with a magnificent view. The South Tower featured two observation decks -- indoors on the 107th floor and outdoors above the 110th floor, more than 1,360 feet above the city.

Since the attacks, World Trade Center first responders have faced chronic health problems. Many have been unable to work, and were counting on compensation from the WTC Captive Insurance fund to help them financially. A study by the Mt. Sinai Medical Center found that of 9,000 emergency workers, 70-percent had suffered some type of lung ailment after the attacks, and that 60-percent still faced respiratory problems. Another report released by the FDNY in early May reported that cases of the rare lung disease sarcoidosis had risen dramatically among firefighters and EMS workers who had spent time at Ground Zero. And the worst may not be over. Many of the chemicals that rescue workers were exposed to, like asbestos and dioxin, are dangerous carcinogens.
Michael Pena, Maggie Gyllenhaal, and Maria Bello have been cast in Paramount Pictures' upcoming untitled World Trade Center project, which stars Nicolas Cage and will be directed by Oliver Stone from a screenplay written by Andrea Berloff. Pena will portray Port Authority police officer William J. Jimeno, one of the last two men rescued from the collapsed buildings, and Gyllenhaal will portray his wife, Allison. Maria Bello will play Donna, wife of Sgt. John McLoughlin, the officer who was trapped in the rubble with Jimeno; Nicolas Cage will play McLoughlin. The film is produced by Double Feature Films' Michael Shamberg and Stacey Sher and former InterMedia Films chairman Moritz Borman. Debra Hill will ... be credited, posthumously, as a producer. Shamberg and Sher said, "As we cast this project, we brought the actors together with the real-life heroes they'll be playing.

By the time the contingent of Port Authority officers arrives at the World Trade Center, both Towers had been hit by jetliners and are burning. McLoughlin asks for and gets four volunteers from an assembled group of officers to follow him into the buildings to rescue survivors. The scene is already one of unprecedented horror. The crash of Flight 11 into the 95th floor of the North Tower has trapped all the people above the 92nd floor. As the floors above the crash zone fill with smoke, people began to jump: better to live for 10 seconds in fresh air than suffer a slow and agonizing death from toxic smoke inhalation.
In order to create the 16-acre World Trade Center site, five streets were closed off and 164 buildings were demolished. Construction required the excavation of more than 1.2 million cubic yards of earth, which was used to create 23.5 acres of land along the Hudson River, now part of Battery Park City in lower Manhattan. During peak construction periods, 3,500 people worked at the site. A total of 10,000 people worked on the towers; 60 died during its construction.
