World Trade Center: Towers
built 606 days ago
The South Tower of the World Trade Center was most heavily impacted on floors 87 through 93. The North Tower was impacted at floors 96 through 103. Because the jets hit the towers near the top, the buildings themselves became their own means of destruction as the weight of many floors crushed downward. Later, falling debris and more fires led to the collapse of the smaller 7 World Trade Center building adjacent to the towers.

Bob Borski, 32, a financial director at the AIG insurance organization, with offices six blocks from the World Trade Center, was standing on the 15th floor with his boss, watching as the first tower burned. Then he saw United Airlines Flight 175 heading for the second tower.

View of the smoking World Trade Center as seen from a bus full of police officers heading to the burning building. From this orientation, one can see that only one tower is hit (the north tower). Thus, the view is looking south and therefore the sunlight coming in from the right (west) would lead one to believe it's late afternoon. In actuality, the attacks on the towers took place in the morning. So the sun would be rising from the east and should be coming from the opposite (left) side of the frame. The RCN van represents the company's image from 2004.

Designed by Minoru Yamasaki and Associates, the World Trade Center towers utilized tube construction, which was a popular innovation for skyscrapers of the 1970s. Older structures like the Empire State Building use heavy internal supports and thick masonry. In 1945, when a ten-ton B-25 bomber left a 20-foot hole in the landmark skyscraper, the Empire State Building remained standing. But the heavy masonry building would surely not have survived an impact from the larger passenger jets which struck the World Trade Center towers.

The World Trade Center towers were destroyed on September 11, 2001 by a terrorist act of an extremist Islamic sect. Over 6,433 people from many nations lost their lives in the most horrible attack ever on U.S. soil, and the most violent terrorist act in the history of the modern world.

Aside from withstanding enormous wind loads, the World Trade Center towers were ... constructed to withstand settlement loads. Because the towers were built on six acres of landfill, the foundation of each tower had to extend more than 70 feet below ground level to rest on solid bedrock.
