The first contests resembling the World Series were held during the 1880s, when the leading baseball clubs of the two major leagues—the National League and the American Association—agreed to play in exhibition games following their regular seasons. The name World Championship Series arose during this period, when promoters and journalists sought to arouse interest among fans. These championship series were often unsuccessful, marked by disorganization, weak fan support, and disputes among baseball clubs. The series was not held every year and ended completely after the 1891 season, when the American Association folded.

World Series competition became more balanced after the mid-1960s. The NL and the AL each added new teams, and several existing clubs moved to new cities. The New York Mets, formed in 1962, became responsible for one of the biggest surprises to arise from baseball's expansion. In their first few years, the Mets gained a reputation as one of baseball's poorest teams. But in 1969, they shocked the baseball world by winning 100 regular-season games. They then proceeded to defeat the heavily favored Baltimore Orioles, 4 games to 1, in the World Series.

To be played at the Tom Fazio designed Primm Valley Golf Club, the tournament combines the skill of golf with the wagering savvy of poker and gives amateur players the thrilling opportunity to compete for $750,000 in prize money on NBC national television. The World Series of Golf will be played in a patent-pending method of play that allows for high stakes to ride on each and every shot of the tournament. Similar to poker, players must ante up before teeing off at each hole. Depending on the outcome of the tee shots, the player can then raise, call, check or fold on subsequent shots, with the winner of the hole collecting the pot. Wagers on each individual shot will depend on the player's position, their confidence to make the next shot, and the position of their opponents.

The World Series Club was founded in 1926 by a group of Hartford, Connecticut businessmen who wanted tickets to see the New York Yankees play the St. Louis Cardinals in the World Series. This group included John Reardon and Tommy Frazier (owner of the Lobster Restaurant on Asylum Ave), among many others. One of these businessmen, a friend of Yankee General Manager Ed Barrow, managed to get the tickets. Seeking tickets to the Fall Classic continued for many years. The group stayed at the Lincoln Hotel in New York City while attending the Series. Before attending games, members were regularly invited to tour the Ruppert Brewery, and Yankee owner Jacob Ruppert was named an honorary member of the Club.
