World Series: World Series Champion
built 140 days ago
The World Series is the championship finals of the winners of the American League and National League of Major League Baseball. All MLB teams are based in the US and some in Canada. The games take place in mid-autumn and this tradition started in 1903.

Origins: For over a century now, baseball's annual championship, the World Series, has been an essential American ritual. The modern World Series began in 1903, when the National League's pennant-winning Pittsburgh Pirates agreed to a best-of-nine playoff series against the Boston Pilgrims, champions of the upstart American League (which had made the jump from minor league to major league just two years earlier). After a one-year interruption in 1904 (when the New York Giants refused to meet the Boston Pilgrims because (depending upon which story you believe) the Giants' owner refused to allow his team to compete against the "inferior" American League or the Giants' manager hated the American League's president), the series resumed as a best-of-seven affair in 1905 and has been waged every autumn since (save for 1994, when it was cancelled due to a players' strike).

The World Series winners have occasionally played winter exhibition series against the best players of other leagues around the world, such as Japan. Sometimes the Japanese have gained the upper hand in those series; but since they are only exhibitions, their results cannot be regarded as conclusive. Attempts to pit the North American champions against champions in the Japanese or Latin American leagues in a truly meaningful way have, so far, not succeeded.

Cart Champ Car World Series Racing Vasser needs no introduction to road-racing fans, as his championship success in the Champ Car World Series is legendary – nine poles, 10 victories and 33 podiums in 231 career starts. The open-wheel veteran is no stranger to the high banks of Daytona, either, as he helped the Comptech team take the 1992 IMSA Lights class victory at the 24 Hours, and finished third in 1999 piloting a Ferrari 333SP.
Last year's World Series of Poker shattered all participation and prize money records for a live poker tournament. The 45 events generated 32,341 player entries and more than $106 million in gross prize money. Joseph Hachem of Melbourne, Australia, won the World Series of Poker Championship and an unprecedented $7.5 million.
The World Series is held in October and concludes the major league baseball season. Beginning in late March or early April, NL teams and AL teams play 162 regular-season games for the right to compete in their league's postseason playoffs. These separate playoffs match the best four teams in each league. They determine who wins the pennant, or championship, of each league. The two pennant winners play in the World Series.
