The World Series is the Super Bowl of baseball, just as the Super Bowl is the World Series of football. It is the culmination of thousands and thousands of innings of baseball over the course of the season, and pits the two best teams of the two pro baseball leagues against one another. What more could you want? If you really need a reason to go to the World Series, you probably shouldn't.

The 1991 World Series was the first Series to feature a team who had finished in last place the previous year. Oddly enough, this distinction applied to both Series participants that year, the Minnesota Twins and the Atlanta Braves.

The explanation is that when the term "World's Championship Series" was first used in the 1880s, baseball at a highly-skilled level was almost exclusively confined to North America, especially the United States. Thus it was understood that the winner of the major league championship was the best baseball team in the world. The title of this event was soon shortened to "World's Series" and later to "World Series".

The Boston Red Sox entered their 2006 season with the goal of bringing The World Series back to Boston. Finishing the season with an 86-76 record was not enough for the Red Sox to earn a trip to the post-season. With a disappointing end to their 2006 campaign, the Red Sox entered the off-season knowing that they had to improve their team to win the increasingly difficult AL East.
