Woodstock: Woodstock Music
built 137 days ago
The site for folk music in Woodstock, Illinois, which is such a nice place that it was actually chosen to star in a movie. Director Harold Ramis picked it to play the part of Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, in his 1993 comedy Groundhog Day. And the National Trust for Historic Preservation named Woodstock one of a Dozen Distinctive Destinations for 2007.
To this day, the founders of Woodstock disagree on who came up with the original idea for the concert. And, dulled by time, competition and countess retelling, no one recollection is consistent. Lang and Kornfeld say Woodstock was always planned as the largest music festival ever held. At the second meeting, Lang recalls discussing a budget of $500,000 and attendance of 100,000. Lang said he had started looking at festival sites in the fall of 1968, which would have been well before he'd hooked up with Kornfeld or Roberts and Rosenman. But Rosenman and Roberts maintain that they were the driving force behind the festival.

The Original Woodstock Poster with the Wallkill, New York location The documentary film, Woodstock, was directed by Michael Wadleigh and edited by Thelma Schoonmaker and Martin Scorsese, was released in 1970. Warner Brothers agreed to pay $100,000 for the film. So Wadleigh proceeded to round up a crew of about 100 from the New York scene. With no money to pay the crew he agreed a double or nothing scheme in which double pay was received if it went well whereas they received nothing if it bombed. The plot was simple, like a modern day Canterbury Tale, he strived to make the film as much about the hippies as the music, listening to their feelings about the times, the Vietnam War for example, as well as the views of the townspeople. To him this is what would make the film, not just the music[22].
This marks the longest period MTV has gone LIVE for a televised event since Woodstock '99. Twenty years ago this July 13th, MTV: Music Television presented wall to wall coverage of the first Live Aid concert organized by Sir Bob Geldof's organization, Band Aid. A veritable who's who of rock and pop music performed from two stadiums on two continents to benefit African famine relief. Many of the now legendary artists who performed at the original Live Aid will be on hand for this year's Live 8, along with current artists from every musical genre including pop, rock, hip-hop, rap and country.

Old-timers still whining that RS has passed its glory days of Woodstock and Hunter S. Thompson should shut up. It's naive to hold the mag to a standard that doesn't make money anymore. But when Ed Needham -- a former helmsman for the laddish men's mag FHM -- became Rolling Stone's new managing editor, the old-timers groaned. Needham talked about shortening the articles, punching up the 'tude, jazzing up the graphics and ensuring no one utters the phrase "your father's music magazine."
