LYCOS RETRIEVER
Wonder Woman

The return of the "original" Wonder Woman was executed by Robert Kanigher, who returned as the title's writer-editor. For the first year he relied upon rewritten and redrawn stories from the Golden Age. Following that, a major two-year story arc (largely written by Martin Pasko) consisted of the heroine's attempt to gain readmission in the Justice League of America. (Diana had quit the organization after renouncing her powers.) To prove her worthiness to rejoin the JLA, Wonder Woman voluntarily underwent twelve trials (analogous to the labors of Hercules), each of which was monitored in secret by a member of the JLA. Towards the end of this story-line, Steve Trevor was resurrected by Aphrodite. He adopted the identity of Steve Howard, and worked alongside Diana Prince (now knowing her true identity) at the United Nations.

The Wonder Woman TV show was a fantasy series. Following a dogfight with a Nazi Pilot, a United States Air Corps Major crashed on Paradise Island, mysteriously hidden in the Bermuda Triangle. The Amazon race of women there had super strength and powers so they decided to send someone back with the Major to help defeat the Nazis. Princess Diana found a way to ensure that she was the one chosen and that started the saga of Wonder Woman!

Although Jesus, Superman, and Wonder Woman have all returned from the dead, they each did so for different purposes. Jesus' death was the defining event of Christianity, and effectively marked the end of his face-to-face ministry. Superman's death was, at best, the springboard for a Big Comics Event. Diana's was likewise temporary, but instead of disappearing from her title for a few months, she "ascended into Heaven," becoming the Olympian Goddess of Truth while her mother went adventuring as Wonder Woman. Therefore, Diana's death added another level to her mission, making her divine at least for a little while.

If the people making the show remembered, Wonder Woman had an unbreakable magic lasso too. It broke about once a week, and she left it lying around even more than that. Most times, it caught up with her by the next scene, though. One of her favorite attacks was to throw the thing around a monster's neck, turning it into a monster with a rope dangling from its neck. Then it usually wandered off with her rope.

As Wonder Woman, Diana took Trevor to a hospital in Washington D.C. She then began exploring her new home, intercepting a bank robbery in the process. Using the "bullets and bracelets" routine, she quickly defeated the felons. She departed quickly as the police arrived but not before attracting the attention of Al Kale, a local promoter. Kale offered Wonder Woman the chance to obtain the money she would need to establish herself in a new identity. Kale designed a show based on the Amazon's skill at deflecting bullets, which quickly became a hit. When Diana read that Steve Trevor had recovered, she quickly resigned from Kale's enterprise.

In 1987, Wonder Woman made it to her second volume, and writer Greg Potter and editor Janice Race were hired to discuss ideas and plots. After the second issue, Potter left and artist/writer George Perez was hired. Perez became the main writer and sometimes was helped out by Len Wein and Mindy Newell. Perez and Potter wrote Wonder Woman as a feminist-type character. To further enhance the stories of Wonder Woman, Perez researched Greek mythology which added depth and a refreshing original origin story.
