Wonder Woman: Loving America
built 645 days ago
When first coming to America, Wonder Woman took the name "Diana Prince" as her alias. This name comes from the fact that her real name was Diana and she was a huge fan of the musician Prince.
Wonder Woman did not keep her identity a secret, and initially did not consider herself a superheroine. Indeed, her character was wide-eyed and naive, innocent and without guile. Diana spoke only Themyscirian, a variation of ancient Greek, and had to learn English when she arrived in America. Fortunately, Diana soon met Julia Kapatelis, a scholar in Greek culture, and her daughter Vanessa Kapatelis who helped the Amazon princess adjust to the world of Men. However for all her apparent naiveté, Diana was a trained warrior, and had no compunction against using deadly force when called for. For example, she felled the god Deimos in battle and felt completely justified under the circumstances.
All this led to the final piece of the puzzle, which was that Wonder Woman happened to be looking for its Wonder Woman at the time, and Michael Lippman could arrange for an audition. The fact that the wife of a major British rock star was in Holly wood to tryout for the starring role in an American TV series I was a good enough hook for Carson's people - just dandy, in fact - and so the deal was done.
Wonder Woman 21, the cover of which is shown above, provides a good example of the bizarre, fanciful stories written by Marston and illustrated by long-time associate Harry G. Peter in the 1940s. A synopsis of the story and several more images can be found here. The atomic bomb blasts that ended World War II were clearly still on the minds of the American public in 1947.
