The opportunity for education beyond the elementary level was essentially non-existent for women in England during the Renaissance. Oxford University did not allow attendance by women until late in the nineteenth century, and it did not grant degrees to women until 1927. Even then the number of women allowed to attend lectures was limited until 1956.

In Italy, trafficked and/or prostituted Polish women arrived around 1989, followed, in 1992, by Nigerians and some Peruvians and Colombians. Between 1993 and 1994 Albanians came and, by 1995, it was Albanians and Nigerians.

Women's Christian Democratic Movement was registered by the Ministry of Justice on 27 January, 1993 as civic-political organization (certificate ¹447). In connection with the changes of Law on Political Parties and Civic Organizations WCDM went through re-registration in March, 1995 with the change of status from civic-political to civic organization (certificate No 0151). According to the Fiat ¹2 in September, 1999 the next re-registration took place (certificate No 00489) and the organization received its new name - Women's Independent Democratic Movement.

Under the scheme women in straitened economic circumstances would get between €250 (£170) and €350 a month for up to six months before giving birth. The idea of this project starts from the results of the surveys related to the abuses against Moroccan women who live in Italy. From a sample of 2000 women, 70% of them was physically abused (68% at home). Most kept it secret.
