Women in Italy: Works
built 614 days ago
Two women at the center of one such network were Laura Solera Mantegazza (1815-1873) and Ismene Sormani Castelli (1811-1903), both active in Milan. Mantegazza married at seventeen and devoted a great deal of energy to educating her own children. But during the Revolution of 1848, she organized a committee and raised money to help the wounded. Her financial efforts proved successful, and with surplus funds she established the first day-care center for infants in Milan. The center enabled working women to leave babies in a healthy environment with wetnurses and medical help available. The center ... disseminated general health information to working mothers.

The low level of skills and lack of qualifications of many Black, ethnic minority and migrant women force them to work in the informal economy, in low-paid and low-skilled jobs. Training policies that aim to develop skills would increase their employability and their ability to compete in the labour market. Pre-training courses, which build self-confidence, are ... relevant. Indeed, despite working whether in the informal or formal economy , Black, ethnic minority and migrant women often lack confidence in their own skills due to their subordinate financial and social status.

The project of the team-work on Lilith Net Archives is to build a net of female archives collecting and describing the "herstorical" memory of women in Italy. The first stage of this work produced a book: "Reti della memoria. Censimento di fonti per la storia delle donne in Italia" (Memory nets.

This grouping of biographies of women in a variety of scientific pursuits from the 1800's to present tends to be very fact focused with some examination of the social factors that these women dealt with during their careers. The biographies do not offer a lot of analysis, but this could be addressed in the classroom. The chapter on Rosalind Franklin is particularly interesting and talks about her childhood experiences and her relationship with her father. It ... addresses the lack of recognition she received for her work on the structure of DNA in opposition to Watson and Crick.

The 8th of March is a day of celebration: indeed most women in Italy take advantage of this event to spend an evening having fun and enjoying themselves, at times allowing a little transgression to creep in, too. It is an opportunity to get together with closest friends, work colleagues, ex-school mates and old friends with whom they have lost touch. There are plenty of events in different venues: every restaurant, pizzeria and club organises theme parties. If... you want to enjoy a more intimate evening dedicated to gossip and catching up, it is advisable to invite friends round and make them a meal on the theme of "yellow", the colour of the mimosa flowers traditionally given on Women's Day.
