The first Nigerian women who worked as prostitutes in Italy usually did so independently and were not trafficking victims. In the early 1990s... the rising difficulties of traveling to and settling in Europe meant that prospective emigrants were increasingly dependent on large loans.

Findings from the interviews with trafficked women provide an indication of the profile of victims of trafficking. Particularly alarming is the fact that some of the victims were mere teenage girls, aged as young as 14, when they were trafficked to Italy. And many of the victims interviewed are today aged between 17 and 20.

Recruitment of girls, usually teenagers, as sex slves often starts with the enticement of potential victims with promises of good jobs in Europe by baronesses who are ironically women. Some of the girls' parents ... encourage them to go abroad insensibly in search of greener pastures and with the hope that the daughters would repatriate foreign currencies.
