"Avalanche, a new ride at Timber Falls Adventure Park, Wisconsin Dells [WI]... Although it's no dream and definitely no kiddie ride, Avalanche is the tallest, fastest and longest wooden roller coaster in the state, said Tory Wolfram, general manager at Timber Falls. The steepest banks are 70 degrees and the coaster has a total of 12 drops, with the tallest being 10 stories. The gravity and momentum from the tallest drop propels the ride, Wolfram said. The ride, which opened July 5, has been well-received by all ages, but real small kids are not able to ride, Wolfram said. There is a height requirement of 46 inches."

Preview: The Wisconsin Dells symbolize tourism in the Midwestern consciousness. Flatlanders from Illinois, Cheese Heads from Milwaukee, and others from around the area have been flocking here since shortly before the Civil War. Lured by stereoscopic photographs taken by noted camera artist H. H. Bennett, visitors flocked to enjoy the boat rides, fresh air, and the chocolate fudge. Fifteen miles of waterway along the river make up the Upper and Lower Dells, an evolution of the French word dalles, which means “river gorges.” Conservation-minded environmentalists fought hard and won protection for the shoreline, which remains pristine, wooded, and quiet. The honky-tonk aspect of the Dells, with its animal parks, souvenir shops, haunted houses, and museums, is inland and well away from the river. But step back for a minute to the tail-end of the Cambrian Period of the earth’s formation.
