In the early 1960s, a group of Vancouver businessmen dreamed of bringing the 1968 Olympic Winter Games to British Columbia. After exploring the Coast Mountain range north of Vancouver, they found the perfect spot - a place called London Mountain.

Most Olympic Games have been held in European and North American cities; only a few games have been held in other places, and all bids by countries in South America and Africa have failed. Many believe the games should expand to include locations in poorer regions. Economists point out that the massive infrastructure investments could springboard cities into earning higher GDP after the games.

There will be a new roof on BC Place in time for the 2010 Winter Olympic Games. But whether it will be the familiar air-supported roof that has graced Vancouver's skyline for 25 years, or a more modern open-centre roof has not yet been decided. David
