Winston Churchill was a remarkable man. He was born in 1874 in Blenhiem Palace in Oxfordshire, England. When he was fifteen his father offered him to join the army. Winston accepted the offer and was in the army for seven years. After the army Winston decided he wanted to get into politics. He gave speeches in front of thousands of people and said that he would not let his country down. At first they did not believe him because in his early years as a student he got straight F's.

Sixty years ago, at the invitation of President Harry Truman, Winston Churchill delivered his historic Iron Curtain address in Fulton, Missouri, to warn Americans of the menace they faced in the Soviet Union. On Monday, U.N. Secretary General Kofi Annan gave his valedictory speech at the Truman Library in Independence to instruct Americans about the principles of global leadership and their need for the United Nations. The comparison says a lot about Mr. Annan's legacy and the current state of the U.N.

After this, Winston Churchill went into politics. He had a chequered career up to World War Two and was seen as something of a maverick. In 1900, he was elected Conservative MP for Oldham but in 1904, he left the Conservative Party and joined the Liberal Party, which, he believed, better represented his economic views on free trade. From 1906 to 1908, he was a Liberal MP for northwest Manchester and from 1908 to 1922, he was MP for Dundee.
Winston Churchill had been captivated by Chartwell from the moment he set eyes on the valley, and ultimately purchased the home overlooking the Weald of Kent in September, 1922. Chartwell was the subject of many projects over the ensuing years and provided countless scenes, still-lives and interiors, for Winston's brush. A "View from Chartwell" was completed in 1938 and first displayed in the Studio at Chartwell.
