Winona Ryder, who met the actor on the set of 1990 film ‘Edward Scissorhands’ and was engaged to him for around three years, has revealed her dad Michael Horowitz forbid the pair from tying the knot. It is because she was only 17 at the time.

Having grown up on a commune with hippie parents and godfather Timothy Leary, Ryder had ample opportunity to observe the quirky teens she would portray on screen in Lucas (1986), Beetlejuice (1988), Mermaids (1990), and Edward Scissorhands (1990). Ryder turned in Oscar-nominated performances in The Age of Innocence (1993) and Little Women (1994). Her other film credits include Bram Stroker's Dracula (1992), Reality Bites (1994), How to Make an American Quilt (1995), The Crucible (1996), Alien: Resurrection (1997), and Autumn in New York (2000). She was found guilty of shoplifting in 2002.

After several long-term relationships (see below), Ryder has in recent years accumulated enough brief romantic entanglements to put her in the same league with such noted Hollywood lotharios as Warren Beatty and Glenn Ford. She has been linked with singer-songwriter Ryan Adams, millionaire Dodi al-Fayed, Beck, Bono, Edward Burns, George Clooney, Green Day's Tre Cool, Lemonhead Evan Dando, Daniel Day-Lewis, Robert Downey, Jr., David Duchovny, Counting Crows' Adam Duritz, Jakob Dylan, Jimmy Fallon, Nirvana's Dave Grohl, Corey Haim, Helmet's Page Hamilton, Chris Isaak, Stephan Jenkins, Old 97's Rhett Miller, Chris Noth, Conor Oberst, Erik Schrody (aka Everlast), Charlie Sheen, Mark Wahlberg, rocker Paul Westerberg, White Stripes' Jack White, Bruce Willis, and musician Pete Yorn. Courtney Love once remarked, "You're no-one in music until you have feuded with me or until you sleep with Winona".

Noted for constantly challenging herself with each project, Ryder has made a habit of working with some of the most acclaimed directors in film today. In addition to those previously mentioned, Ryder has taken direction from Jean-Pierre Jeunet (Alien: Resurrection), Woody Allen (Celebrity), Nicholas Hytner (The Crucible), Bille August (The House of the Spirits), Francis Ford Coppola (Bram Stoker's Dracula), Jim Jarmusch (Night on Earth), Tim Burton (Edward Scissorhands and Beetlejuice), Michael Lehman (Heathers), Ben Stiller (Reality Bites), Al Pacino (Looking For Richard), Joan Chen (Autumn in New York), Janusz Kaminski (Lost Souls) and Jocelyn Moorehouse (How To Make an American Quilt).

Winona Ryder's Career Being cast in the 1985 cult film "Heathers" gave Winona a semi-gothic tomboy street cred that carried over to Tim Burton movies "Beetlejuice" and "Edward Scissorhands," marking Winona as one of the most exciting fringe actresses of her generation. Unfortunately, later roles in movies such as "The Age of Innocence," "The Crucible," and "Girl, Interrupted" were far less exciting—and didn’t seem to take advantage of her quirky style as well. In 2001, Winona’s career was sidetracked with an embarrassing arrest and shoplifting charge at Beverly Hill’s Saks Fifth Avenue, leading counterculture fans to wear shirts saying “Free Winona.” After a long absence from any decent film roles, her turn in Richard Linklater's animated "A Scanner Darkly" may return her to underground cult status. Upcoming are quirky films "The Darwin Awards," "Sex and Death 101" and a long-rumored sequel to "Heathers."
