John Monk Saunders, who wrote the original story for "Wings," was a real-life aviator who knew exactly what went on in that first air war. So did the film's young director, 31-year-old William Wellman, an American who already had fought in the French Foreign Legion and had actually flown with France's legendary Lafayette Escadrille. After the war, he made a living as a stunt pilot in air shows before turning to the movies. For that reason, he wanted "Wings" to be as realistic and honest as possible in replicating aerial combat.

In season five of Wings, there are 24 episodes. In this season, Brian spends time with and without his girlfriend Alex. Helen is courted by a man named Davis, and Joe finally accepts his feelings for Helen. Of course, that’s not all. There are several other, non-relationship moments including the episode where Roy gets a makeover and Fay and Helen attempt to have a Christmas Eve party. Favorite episodes on the four Wings discs include “An Affair to Forget”, “Good 2 B 4 Gotten”, “Ready, Teddy, Go”, “Hey Nineteen” and “Roy Crazy”.

Such sequences assured Paramount men would flock to buy tickets, but "Wings" ... lured female moviegoers by featuring four of Hollywood's brightest newcomers in showcase roles that would make them all stars. Rugged Richard Arlen, who plays David, the boy from a wealthy family, was a real-life pilot himself. Distinctively he-man in looks and manner, Arlen was launched into orbit as an action star by "Wings" and stayed one for a generation. (Think of a young Harrison Ford).

Fans of Wings will be disappointed to know that there are no extras included on this four disc set. With so many older television shows having some bonuses, there really is no excuse for Wings to not have any included.

Wings had a fun story that revolved around the antics in a small, Nantucket airport, Tom Nevers Field. The creators of Wings were experienced when it came to sitcoms. The trio, David Angell, David Lee, and Peter Casey have developed other sitcoms including Cheers and Fraiser. This is why there were some crossover stories between characters on Wings and Cheers.
