Wine Tasting: Tastes
built 623 days ago
In 2006, 8,000 guests at the Grand Tasting enjoyed sampling 1,100 wines from more than 350 international wineries, represented by 145 suppliers at what has grown to be America 's largest single day wine tasting. A very entertaining part of the festivities is the lively wine themed auction of paintings, trips, collectibles and rare vintage wines. Some incredible bargains can be had for the lucky bidder. Artists, winemakers and suppliers have generously donated these fine items in support of education.

Wine tasting can be an occasional pleasant diversion or a time-and-resource-consuming passion. It can be conducted casually or formally. No matter what level of orientation or dedication is involved, some basic background knowledge and a logical approach can greatly increase individual enjoyment. Most American wine drinkers cheat themselves by not knowing how to taste; many talk the talk but fail to walk the walk, so a lot of ordinary-tasting wines gets sold at extraordinary prices.

The morning begins at Schramsberg where Hugh Davies leads the group through a vertical tasting, beginning with base wines, and continuing through the finished product to an aged sparkling wine. Finally, you’ll play the part of an honorary winemaker, learning to develop your own dosage, and to disgorge and label your own special bottling. Camp’s final afternoon is focused upon the finer points of marrying wine with food. Chef Holly Peterson Mondavi will share her many years of experience in cuisine-and-wine pairing as you savor the delectable preparations of the CIA chefs, created to complement the finest of Schramsberg’s sparklers. Afterwards, a rousing session of bottle-sabering raises the excitement level, as each camper takes a turn opening a bottle with an antique saber.

Tasting wine is a relatively straight forward, but intimidating process. People tend to be afraid of talking about what they sense, which can inhibit the development of your palate. As you know, wine is a social drink best enjoyed with friends; your individual confidence in wine tasting will make all the difference in the world.
