The wines of La Bri are a product of noble cultivars, good soil and a Mediterranean climate. There are 20ha of vineyard, with Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Weisser Reisling, and a stand of Semillon, more than 90 years old. This special heritage produces a wine of remarkable character and richness. Driaan van der Merwe of Franschhoek Wynkelder is the creative force in the winemaking of the La Bri range. Franschhoek Wynkelder stocks the full range of La Bri wines and conducts tastings and sales at their wine centre.

Jim Koch of Samuel Adams beer argues that the new taste for spicy food--Thai, Moroccan, Ethiopian--has made beer the new dinner wine. No longer is beer just for drunken frat boys and Joe Six-Pack. It is for the refined palate. For more, see here.
When the first phase of the Wine Accord was signed last March, negotiators agreed there was a problem with the protection of place names and as such, the Accord included a ban on the introduction of new, misleading labels. This included protection for 17 specific place names, such as Champagne, Port and Sherry in the U.S. market. Unfortunately, the accord fell short on correcting existing problems.

Good exposure to these qualities enables a thorough assessment of many aspects of the wine. If the sweetness, acidity and tannin are of equal level the wine has good balance. The better balanced the wine, the higher its quality. High quality wines may ... have a potential for balance once aging. Tasting wines for flavor can indicate a wine's age. A savory or spicy flavor in a red wine is reflective of age.

Sighting wines are produced by Agulhas Wines, one of a handful of new wineries based at Elim, a recently proclaimed ward that is now the southernmost wine production region in the country. This area, which is quite remote although only about 200km from Cape Town, is far cooler than other Cape wine-producing areas. It is especially suited to producing grapes that benefit from cooler ripening conditions, such as Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Merlot and Pinot Noir. The uniquely cooler conditions preserve flavour and acidity in the grapes, with tannins remaining soft and elegant. The Elim vineyards are bordered by oceans, and cool sea breezes allow the grapes to ripen gradually. The maritime terroir of the peninsula provides cool laterite, sandstone and broken shale soils in conjunction with mild temperatures and high light intensities during the ripening stages, which endow the grapes with intense berry flavours.
