Wine of the Month: France
built 606 days ago
Situated in the imposing amphitheatre of the Franschhoek valley, La Bri has produced fine wines since the 1600s. In April 1688, the first Huguenots settlers, exiled from France because of their Protestant faith, landed in Saldana Bay. Governor of the Cape, Simon van der Stel, was eager to develop the Cape’s agricultural promise, and welcomed them and the skills they brought with them. In October 1694, nine settlers were granted farms in "Olifantshoekvallei". They named their farms after their homeland, and Jacques de Villiers called his portion La Bri. Under his direction the elephant-inhabited wilderness became cultivated vineyard, today known as Franschhoek.
