When Richard logs on to the client, the system creates a profile directory for him corresponding to his username Rlang in the Documents and Settings directory. If Richard were to log on to a Windows NT workstation or a Windows 2000 workstation that was upgraded from a previous version of Windows NT, the profile would be created under the %systemroot%\Profiles[2] directory.

All versions of Windows 2000 have things in common, including many system utilities such as the Microsoft Management Console (MMC) and standard system management applications such as a disk defragmentation utility. There is lots of support for different languages and for people with disabilities. Windows 2000 supports the Windows NT filesystem NTFS 5, the Encrypted File System (EFS), as well as basic and dynamic disk storage. Dynamic disk storage allows different types of volumes to be used (a volume is an area of storage on a hard disk that has been formatted with its own file system structure). The Windows 2000 Server version has many more features, including the ability to provide Active Directory services (a way of organising resources such as printers, users and group), a distributed file system (a file system that supports sharing of files) and fault-redundant storage volumes.

NEW YORK CITY, New York Macworld Expo - July 19, 2000 - Kaidan Incorporated, the leading manufacturer of Photographic VR hardware, announced and publicly demonstrated today AutoPan, a motorized, computer-controlled panoramic tripod head. Kaidan AutoPan is a modular system that will eventually support a wide-range of cameras and image-capture solutions. The first member of the AutoPan family, that Kaidan is announcing, supports the Kodak DC290 digital camera. This camera uses the Digita operating system from Flashpoint, and when used with the AutoPan, the camera controls the movement of the motorized head and the capture of the images. Kaidan is actively working with other digital camera manufacturers to provide AutoPan support for their cameras.

Inside this directory, the Windows NT/2000 system places a file called NTUSER.DAT, along with various other data files. Let's concentrate on the NTUSER.DAT file for a moment. This file contains what is known generally as the user portion of the registry. You see, Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows NT, and Windows 2000 all have a registry that consists of two parts: the so-called user portion represented by the file NTUSER.DAT (or USER.DAT on Windows 9x systems) and the system or computer portion of the registry, known as SYSTEM.DAT.[3] The user part of the registry holds information indicating what screensaver should be used for that user; what colors, background, and event sounds are set; where the user's My Documents folder points to; and so on. The system portion of the registry holds hardware device settings, installed software information, and so on. When a user logs on to a client, the combined effects of the settings for the machine held in the system portion of the registry and the settings for the user held in the user portion of the registry take effect.
