The Winamp interface uses dockable or detachable panes, and the main ones are the Controller, Media Library, Playlist Editor, and Video playback windows. This multipanel approach takes some getting used to if you're accustomed to a player such as WMP or iTunes, and it has certainly scared away some average Joe users who felt they weren't hip enough for the room. If that's you, keep at it: Winamp provides so much for free that it's worth learning. The main Controller sits at the top and shows you what's currently playing; it provides a 10-band equalizer and tools for customizing the interface. The Media Library sits below it and provides access to local content, online audio and video files, and playlists. The bottom of this window displays album art and artist biographies accessed over the Internet.

Winamp will now be playing "through" Streamripper. The entry in the Playlist will probably change name to something like '[relay stream] + stream name ...'. The normal entry for the stream is no longer in use - you can remove it if you want to - it doesn't matter.

Winamp has extensive support for plugins. Input plugins allow Winamp to play additional media formats, while output plugins enable additional features such as sound effects (via DSP plugins) and visual effects (notably Advanced Visualization Studio, or AVS, and MilkDrop). Other plugins included in the installer bundle activate features such as global hotkeys. The plugins enable can be selected during installation due to Winamp's use of NSIS to package the application.

Besides MP3, Winamp supports a very wide variety of contemporary and specialized music file formats, including MIDI, MOD, MPEG-1 audio layers 1 and 2, AAC, M4A, FLAC, WAV and Windows Media Audio. Winamp was one of the first common music players on Windows to support playback of Ogg Vorbis by default. It supports gapless playback for MP3 and AAC, and Replay Gain for volume levelling across tracks. Winamp is not called the definitive audio player for nothing. It doesn't only support MP3 playback as one might expect. It's ... capable of playing a huge list of other popular audio formats including wav, voc, x3m, and the mpeg series.
