The Winamp series started about a year ago. Since then there have been upgraded and new versions almost monthly. Most of them were simply filled with bugfixes, but some beheld superior attractions like the skins feature, around Winamp 1.6. A few short months ago the long-awaited Winamp 2.05 was released, which possessed an infinite list of features, options and personalization control. Since then a few other versions have been released and the program is now standing at Winamp 2.5.

The Winamp 2 and Winamp3 branches were later fused into Winamp 5 — Nullsoft justified their non-sequential christening by quipping that 2 + 3 = 5 — taking the best parts from both applications. They ... joked that "nobody wants to see a Winamp 4 skin" ('4 skin' being a pun on foreskin)[12]. Winamp 5 was based on the Winamp 2 codebase, with several Winamp3 features (e.g. modern skins) incorporated. Winamp 5.0 was released in December 2003. Most of the Wasabi framework built for creating Winamp3 and its components was released as open source, and as of 2005 an active development effort has succeeded in making a standalone version of Wasabi, minus the skinning and scripting modules which were never released.

Winamp might best be described as the time-warp music jukebox. Winamp was born as a very basic media player and has slowly but consistently improving for many years. Its main purpose was to be completely customizable and through the years, many people have contributed to a library that now consists of 20,000 skins and 461 plug-ins.
