Winamp 5 comes in three versions. Lite and Full are freeware, and Pro requires registration and (as of October, 2007) sells for US$19.95. The Lite version has far less functionality (largely supplementable with plugins) while still replicating most of Winamp 2's feature set in a far smaller installer. The Full version offers a richer feature set, including music ripping and CD burning at limited speeds (6x for ripping and 2x for burning). The Pro version features unlimited speed music ripping and CD burning and MP3 encoding.

The slick analyzer which is built into Winamp allowing visuals such as spectrum analyzers and oscilloscopes may not be enough to satisfy the graphic junkies. In order to broadcast to a running SHOUTcast server, you will need the SHOUTcast Source for Winamp 5.x DSP Plug-in, a piece of software which adds SHOUTcast broadcast ability to the Winamp 5.x software. General purpose plugins are for general ease-of-use of Winamp and control of playback. These just make it easier and more efficient to run Winamp such as docking a minimized tray of controls onto the current window or to free some space while still maintaining full control. Other plugins are made for specific criteria such as one enabling Winamp to be controlled via a joystick, or being able to play the same file synchronously on a network for a real spacious sound.

Im Gegensatz zu den oben genannten Plugins beeinflussen General-Purpose-Plugins die Wiedergabe nicht, stattdessen erweitern sie Winamp selbst. So ist es beispielsweise unter Verwendung eines Plugins möglich, Winamp zu jeder Zeit und unter jedem beliebigen Anwendungsprogramm per Tastatur zu bedienen. Andere Plugins erweitern Winamp um Medienbibliotheken, in der Musikstücke und Videos katalogisiert und organisiert werden können. Für beide hier gestellte Aufgabenbereiche werden bereits Plugins mitgeliefert.
