Winamp: Nullsoft Winamp
built 614 days ago

On the face of it, Winamp from Nullsoft may not seem like a terribly accessible programme. Although the interface from the keyboard is somewhat unorthodox, you'll find that Winamp is in fact one of the most accessible of the fully featured MP3 players. This section seeks to help you understand what Winamp can do, how to configure it, and all the keyboard secrets will be revealed.

At this point you should be able to play any MKV, MP4, or OGM file in Winamp. Note the word should is very important. Since Nullsoft is attempting to emulate DirectShow with its little plugin, or is tapping into it somehow, not everything that works normally in DShow is likely to work in Winamp. Such as the fact that VSFilter is not allowed to load of its own accord, it must be forced to load. The real solution is to simply not use Winamp for video playback. Keep it for audio playback as it was originally intended.

Visually, Winamp has been in a holding pattern since AOL's acquisition of Nullsoft in June 1999, although its developers make sure it keeps up with current features. The latest releases build in access to AOL Music Now (AOL's online music store) and In2TV (AOL's online TV reruns channel). They've ... added native support for portable music players and free access to 20 XM Satellite Radio channels, courtesy of AOL Radio. AOL corporate expansion seems to drive much of the development but certainly not everything; a component called Shoutcast Wire lets users discover, subscribe to, and download podcasts. The paid version ($19.95) lets you rip and burn CDs at up to 48X speed, as well as encode tracks to AAC+, AAC, MP3, and WMA.

Within the Winamp preferences select the Output option and double-click "Nullsoft Disk Writer plug-in" option. Once this option has been chosen, the user will be asked the location to where they wish for their WAV files to be stored, select a location to where to place the WAV files (note you will need several hundred megs depending upon how many songs you want to place on a CD-R).

In response to users reverting to Winamp 2, Nullsoft continued the development of Winamp 2 to versions 2.9 and 2.91. The beta versions 2.92 and 2.95 were released with the inclusion of some upcoming Winamp 5 functionality. During this period the Wasabi cross-platform application framework and skinnable GUI toolkit was derived from parts of the Winamp3 source code. For Linux, Nullsoft released an alpha version of Winamp3 in October 9, 2001 but has not updated it despite continued user interest.
