Prior to his broadcasting career, Williams worked in the White House during the Carter administration, beginning as a White House intern. He later worked as assistant administrator of the political action committee of the National Association of Broadcasters in Washington. A native of both Elmira, NY and Middletown, N.J., Williams is particularly proud of his several years of service as a volunteer firefighter in New Jersey.

Williams entered a customer March 761 for the 1977 season. Lone driver Patrick Neve appeared at 11 races that year, starting with the Spanish Grand Prix. The new team failed to score a point, achieving a best finish of 7th at the Italian Grand Prix.[2]

Williams has been awarded several gold and platinum records, and his score for Schindler's List earned him both an Oscar and a Grammy. In 2000, at the ShoWest Convention USA, he was honored as Maestro of the Year by the National Association of Theater Owners.

Williams has been first seven times since 1989, and has been first nine times since US News started the rankings. Williams is ranked eighth in the Washington Monthly rankings[8], which focus on research and certain types of public service. Williams ranked fifth, after Harvard, Yale, Princeton, and Stanford, in a 2004 Wall Street Journal survey of the "feeder schools" to the top fifteen business, law, and medical schools in the country.[9]

Williams’ writing has appeared in The New York Times, Time Magazine and the Los Angeles Times. GQ named him "the most interesting man in television today," and in 2001 named him "Man of the Year." The National Father's Day Committee named him "Father of the Year" in 1996.

Known as much for his permed hair as he is for his animated performances and quick wit, Williams has been making his mark in Hollywood for more than 10 years. His influence in comedy took off in 1999 when he became a large presence at The Improv, The Comedy Club, The Icehouse and even had his own room at The Hollywood Park Casino where he had a large, loyal following.
