William Hooker Gillette was born in Hartford, Connecticut, on July 24, 1853. He was the youngest of the six children of Francis Gillette, reformer and United States Senator, and his wife Elisabeth Daggett Hooker. On his mother’s side, he was descended from the Reverend Thomas Hooker, one of the founders of Hartford.

Three public camps along the Connecticut River at Hurd, Gillette Castle and Selden Neck State Parks are managed by the Department of Environmental Protection for your enjoyment. The campsites are available from May 1 through September 30 for overnight stops by those traveling on the river.

Located within East Haddam, Connecticut just on the edges of the Connecticut River is this Medieval styled home (now a museum) of William Hooker Gillette(1853-1937). Gillette, an American actor and playwright is best known for his portrayal of Sherlock Holmes.

From late May to Mid November you can take the Chester - Hadlyme ferry across the CT River from Chester to get to Gillette Castle. While crossing the river, the castle is in full view, in all it's majesty sitting atop the cliffs.
