A former vaudevillian, William Frawley was born in Burlington, Iowa on February 26, 1887. He began his film career in the 1930s, and for twenty years, in approximately 150 films of every conceivable genre, Frawley played variations on a gruff but likeable character. Some of his more notable films include "The Lemon Drop Kid," "Strike Me Pink," "The General Died at Dawn," "Huckleberry Finn," "Roxie Hart," "Gentleman Jim," "Going My Way," "Ziegfeld Follies," "The Virginian," "The Miracle on 34th Street," "Monsieur Verdoux," "The Babe Ruth Story," the remake of "The Lemon Drop Kid," and "Rancho Notorious." His last feature film appearance was in 1962's "Safe at Home!"

For the "I Love Lucy Show" the casting of William Frawley and the then unknown Vivian Vance was sheer genius. Although Vance was often unhappy to be playing the frumpy wife of a man who was 22 years her senior, she would stick with Lucille Ball into the "Lucille Ball Show" and "Here's Lucy."

In section 9.3 (406-19), Frawley first surveys epistemic notions from the literature, that is, he considers the manner in which speakers express judgment about factual statements and the likelihood of a state of affairs. He presents Palmer's account of judgments and evidentials and Givón's (1982) theory of epistemic scales. He then simplifies and unifies these accounts by analyzing epistemic modality using notions of deixis (a common thread through much of the book): deictic points, direction, and remoteness, as "linguistic truth relativized to a speaker" (418). Deixis refers to the anchoring of an expression, so the speaker might refer to the self or to another as making some judgment. The direction of a judgment has to do with (a) whether the judgment by the self is necessary ('It must be . . .') or possible ('It might be . . .') or is based on some sense perception ('I hear that . . . ' or 'I see that . . .'), or (b) whether a judgment comes from some other person directly ('Bill said that . . .') or indirectly ('Bill heard that . . .'). Remoteness refers to how strongly or confidently the self or the other is committed to the judgment, differentiating, for example, a quote from a report, or a report from hearsay.

Frawley flipped his car in Fairfax on April 10 and left Inova Fairfax Hospital the next morning against medical advice, police said. Authorities issued a warrant charging him with driving under the influence.

Unhappy in his railroad job, Frawley longed for the stage. He finally decided he couldn't resist and formed a vaudeville act with his younger brother, Paul. Six months later, Frawley's mother ordered Paul back to Iowa. It was during this period that Bill wrote a script called Fun in a Vaudeville Agency. He earned over five hundred dollars for his efforts; after this, he decided to move West, ending up in Denver, Colorado. He was hired as a singer at a café, and after building up a strong reputation, teamed with pianist Franz Rath.

After briefly returning to his Montana ranch and selling his herd for a gambling stake, the Duke learns how to play cards from experienced dealer Wolf Wylie (William Frawley). On his return to the Barbary Coast, Duke wins a fortune from all the gambling houses on Pacific Street and builds a casino The Silver Dollar to compete against his rival. Duke buys out Flaxen's contract from Tito and puts her songbird talent to work in his joint-- she ... becomes his main squeeze. The 1906 earthquake not only destroys the Duke's place but severely injures Flaxen with paralysis. When she recovers, they leave for the pure air of Montana and the Duke earns once again an honest living by hard work.
