William Frawley is Dean of the Columbian College of Arts and Science at George Washington University, where he is ... Professor of Anthropology and Psychology. Prior to that he was Professor and Chair in the Department of Linguistics and Director of Cognitive Science at the University of Delaware, where he was also Faculty Director for Academic Programs and Planning and Director of the University's Office of Undergraduate Studies. His previous books include Vygotsky and Cognitive Science: Language and the Unification of the Social and Computational Mind (1997). Kenneth Hill is Research Associate in the Bureau of Applied Research in Anthropology and in the Department of Linguistics at the University of Arizona. His previous publications include Hopi Dictionary/HoÏikwa Lavytutuveni: A Hopi-English Dictionary of the Third Mesa Dialect (1998), for which he was editor-in-chief. Pamela Munro is Professor of Linguistics at the University of California, Los Angeles.

William Frawley will be the new dean of the Columbian College of Arts and Sciences (CCAS) effective July 1. Frawley is leaving his post as the faculty director for academic programs and planning at the University of Delaware. A professor in linguistics, Frawley oversaw the revamping of the core requirements for the College of Arts and Sciences. Prior to this position, he was the linguistics department chair and director of the cognitive science program.

American actor "William Frawley" had hopes of becoming a newspaperman but was sidetracked by a series of meat-and-potatoes jobs. At 21, he found himself in the chorus of a musical comedy in Chicago; his mother forced him to quit, but Frawley had already gotten greasepaint in his veins. Forming a vaudeville act with his brother Paul, Frawley hit the show-business trail; several partners later (including his wife Louise), Frawley was a headliner and in later years laid claim to having introduced the beer-hall chestnut "Melancholy Baby." Entering films in the early 1930s (he'd made a few desultory silent-movie appearances), Frawley became typecast as irascible, pugnacious Irishmen, not much of a stretch from his off-camera personality.

Born in Burlington, Iowa, William Frawley began singing at a young age at Burlington’s St. Paul Catholic Church. He was soon performing at the Burlington Opera House. By the age of 21 he was in Chicago appearing in a musical comedy. His mother forced him to leave that job, but by then he had fallen in love with theater and would soon be performing again.
