William Davidson: Miramichi Valley
built 221 days ago
A large portrait of William Davidson felling trees on the Miramichi hangs on an internal staircase of the Banff Springs Hotel in Banff, Alberta. This is very appropriate as Davidson was a native of Moray, very near the boundary with Banffshire, Scotland.
As the war drew to a close, Davidson, apparently because of the competition on the Saint John River, decided to return to the Miramichi. He must have known that large numbers of refugee loyalists would soon be arriving to demand grants on the Saint John, and he certainly hoped to exploit the valuable timber that covered much of his own grant on the Miramichi. Most of the men who had come to Maugerville with him agreed to go back, and in May1783 he purchased two vessels in Halifax, loaded them with provisions, and set out to re-establish his business. When he arrived at Miramichi, he discovered that all his buildings and fishing craft had been destroyed by the Indians. Re-establishing proved to be an expensive undertaking. He furnished provisions and supplies to the settlers on credit and expended some £5,000 in building stores, a shipyard, and a sawmill.

Davidson was complimented by a comtemporary for his "...genius and high abilities". He must be seen in the context of the great age of the Scottish people. His personal characteristics, industry, vision, practical ability, persistence, and intelligence are the hallmarks of a people who were pioneers in exploration (Alexander Mackenzie, Simon Fraser and David Livingstone), industry (Andrew Carnegie), science (Kelvin), philosophy (David Hume) and politics( Sir John A. Macdonald). Davidson accomplished much, was not deterred by misfortunes which would discourage most, and was the true founder of a distinctive people, the Miramichiers.
The 1911 census lists "Anna G. Davidson" and her family in the census division of Salmon River, Colchester County. In the 1914-5 Nova Scotia Provincial Directory she is listed as "Mrs. J. O. Davidson, Widow", and is ... named in the above-mentioned lawsuit as "Belle (or Bella) Davidson of Valley, Colchester County".
