Ponderosa Pine Cone and new germinate The Association seeks to conserve and reestablish the native strain of Willamette Valley ponderosa pine for both genetic conservation and future timber, wildlife and urban uses. The potential to grow ponderosa pine on soils marginal for other tree species is significant. By planting pine, farmers and other landowners can realize substantial economic and ecological benefits. Thousands of potential planting sites exist within the Willamette Valley. In many areas, pine plantations can coexist well with livestock grazing or other rural land uses. Ponderosa pine's deep root system and stately form ... make it an attractive choice for city parks, urban areas and watershed plantings.
Only a handful of storms stand out in this Willamette Valley ranking. Confidence is very high for the number one spot--with a rating some 27 points higher than the next strongest event, the Columbus Day Storm was clearly the major event of the last 52 years. Confidence for the number two and three spot is a little less. It is interesting that the top three events for the Willamette Valley happened within five years of each other (Oct 1962 to Oct 1967). After the top three, the exact positions of the following storms becomes increasingly uncertain as the number of like events increases, putting them closer together in the rankings. A difference of 1.0 point isn't that much, really, since it represents a change of just seven mph (assuming all seven stations had peak gust data for the time).
The entire development will be called Springbrook, paying homage to the historic community of Springbrook, once a major shipping center for the bounty of the Willamette Valley. Peaches, pears and berries were canned and shipped to such prominent customers as the Queen of England. As the development progresses, the historic school house will be renovated and an old church and train station may be restored.
