Will Smith was born Willard Christopher Smith, Jnr. On September 25th, 1968 in West Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to Willard and Caroline Smith, Snr.His father was a refridgerator engineer and his mother was a school board employee. He was the second of four children, Pam (b. 1964), and twins Ellen and Harry (b. 1971). He grew up in the middle class section of Phillie.

In 1997, Smith released a solo album under his own name, titled Big Willie Style. His first single, "Gettin' Jiggy With It" was a top ten hit. He spoke with Essence concerning why he released another rap album, "I loved Biggie [slain rapper Notorious B.I.G.], but my son doesn't have any alternatives." Big Willie Style was a multi-platinum success. In 1999 he released another rap album, Willennium, at about the same time as his film Wild Wild West opened in theaters. Willennium was another multi-platinum success.
