built 267 days ago
The Will Rogers Memorial Center is a multi-purpose entertainment complex under 45 acres of roof spread over 85 acres in the heart of the Fort Worth Cultural District. The Will Rogers Coliseum was erected along with the auditorium and Landmark Pioneer Tower in 1936, the year of the Texas Centennial. Largest of all the buildings, the coliseum is the first domed structure of its kind in the world. The 2,856 seat auditorium has hosted a wide variety of talent including Jack Benny, Benny Goodman, Glen Miller, The Vienna Boys Choir, and the Rolling Stones. Each year approximately 800,000 people attend the three week event known as the Southwestern Exposition and Livestock Show.

Inside himself, Will Rogers remained a simple Oklahoma cowboy. "I never met a man I didn't like," was his credo of genuine love and respect for humanity and all people everywhere. He gave his own money to disaster victims and raised thousands for the Red Cross and Salvation Army.

By 1918, Will was in the movies and after the end of World War II was writing newspaper articles. In one of them, he reported: "Yesterday was the 20th anniversary of the first flying machine flight by the Wright Brothers. People wouldn't believe a man could fly then and Congress don't believe it yet." Of his knowledge he quipped: "All I know is what I read in the newspapers."
Will Rogers summed up his mind on things in a way that made people chuckle. Serious issues brought to light through humor. There was nothing funny about the war, or corruption, or poverty, or poor education. These were serious issues, and Rogers understood that serious issues had many sides to them, and that seeing those sides kept everyone more honest, and made room for common sense to lead them to more sensible decisions.
Will later became a theater and movie star and a nationally-recognized newspaper columnist. He was the star of Broadway and 71 movies of the 1920s and 1930s; a popular broadcaster; besides writing more than 4,000 syndicated newspaper columns and befriending Presidents, Senators and Kings. During his lifetime, he traveled around the globe three times; meeting people, covering wars, talking about peace and learning everything possible. He wrote six books. In fact he published more than two million words. He was the first well-known radio commentator, was a guest at the White House, and his opinions were sought by the leaders of the world.
