Wildcat Hills, Nebraska The Wildcat Hills landscape is a rocky escarpment that rises several hundred feet on the south side of the North Platte River in western Nebraska. It consists primarily of sandstone, siltstone and volcanic ash. The north bluff of the escarpment is steep, with deep incised canyons. North-facing slopes support ponderosa pine woodlands. Mixed-grass prairie, rock outcrops, and scattered patches of rare sandsage prairie occupy the remainder.

[A] fossil site in Wildcat Hills near Gering is probably the richest in terms of diversity. In the remains of an ancient river there, scientists have identified bones of 44 different species, including at least two that are new to science. The two are a large beaver and a gopher.

Ferndale's Russ Park is a 105-acre preserve located at the southern edge of Ferndale, where the Wildcat Hills (part of the Coast Range) rise abruptly above the nearly level residential areas. Located within easy walking distance of Main Street, and of much of the city, elevations in the park range from about 60 feet to 480 feet above sea level. Ken Mierzwa continues with the ecology of Russ Park.
