Wildcat Hills: Gering
built 262 days ago
The plant and animal life in the Wildcat Hills is atypical for Nebraska; the ecology resembles that of the Laramie Mountains, 60 miles to the west. The dominant tree in the region is the ponderosa pine. Bighorn sheep, pronghorn, elk, mule deer, and wild turkeys live in and around the hills.

The scope of the study was to conduct a complete PHA for Petro-Canada’s Wildcat Hills Gas Plant. The major focus was to be on the flare and ESD systems. The PHA sessions examined all process hazards resulting from equipment failure; human factors and limited external factors. Hazards included those from previous incidents, those that were considered the most catastrophic and those that were raised during the brainstorming part of the PHA. All what-if questions were considered. Recommendations include those recommendations impacting the design of the safety instrument system.

There is a high level of urgency to protect habitat in the Wildcat Hills. The advanced age of many ranch owners and an exponential increase in residential development pressure predispose much of the Wildcat Hills to fragmentation and loss of habitat. Additionally, the cost of purchasing land is well beyond the net income potential of traditional cattle ranching. Developers subdivide land into ranchettes that eliminate wildlife habitat, close off migration routes, introduce invasive species and promote overgrazing, leading to soil erosion.

The scope of the study was to conduct a complete PHASIL study of the separator metering system for the Wildcat Hills/Burnt Timber Tie-in identifying all possible over pressure scenarios. Based on this analysis, ACM was then to provide a conceptual design and cost estimate for a High Integrity Pressure Protection System (HIPPS) for the facility. This HIPPS system was to reduce the size of the PSV and flare system.
