What that says to the layperson is that Wilco really gives a crap about the music. That is all they care about. It ain’t about no image. It ain’t about the loot. It ain’t about the chicks. Etc.

That's not to say Wilco had smashed their acoustic guitars. At the invitation of Woody Guthrie's daughter Nora, Wilco and Billy Bragg were allowed into an archive that housed lyrics Guthrie had written but never set to music, resulting in the Grammy-nominated Mermaid Avenue (1998) as well as the BBC documentary Man in the Sand. A second volume of Mermaid Avenue followed in 2000 and met with less success.

When asked fairly specific questions, Tweedy often goes off on tangents reflecting on his own philosophy of music and of Wilco. These are welcome interludes. He says: "One reason music exists is that you can't say everything. If you could say a melody you would say a melody, but you can't so you have to perform it on a musical instrument". A beautifully simple perspective, if ever there was one.
