Wikipedia is een project van de Wikimedia Foundation, een in Florida gevestigde organisatie zonder winstoogmerk. Onder de paraplu van de Wikimedia Foundation bevinden zich diverse meertalige projecten waarvan Wikipedia het oudste, bekendste en succesvolste is. De naam Wikipedia is een samentrekking (valieswoord) van het uit het Hawaïaans afkomstige "wiki" en het Engelse (maar oorspronkelijk uit het Grieks afgeleide) "encyclopedia".

The Wikimedia Foundation was created from Wikipedia and Nupedia on June 20, 2003.[27] It applied to the United States Patent and Trademark Office to trademark Wikipedia® on September 17, 2004. The mark was granted registration status on January 10, 2006. Trademark protection was accorded by Japan on December 16, 2004, and in the European Union on January 20, 2005. Technically a service mark, the scope of the mark is for: "Provision of information in the field of general encyclopedic knowledge via the Internet". There are plans to license the usage of the Wikipedia trademark for some products, such as books or DVDs.[28] In October 2007 the foundation announced that it plans to move its headquarters from St. Petersburg, Florida, to San Francisco, California, in February 2008.[29]

The Firefox extension upgrades Wikipedia's search engine to the faster, more relevant Wikiseek engine. It is available under a GPL open source license, contains no advertising and works exclusively with the Firefox browser. In addition, the Wikiseek web site is accessible from any browser and features keyword ads. Wikiseek will donate a majority of the site's advertising revenue to the Wikimedia Foundation, which operates Wikipedia, the world's most popular web-based, open source, free-content encyclopedia.

Crowdsourcing video startup Kaltura is partnering with the Wikimedia Foundation to put its video-mashup technology on Wikipedia. The program, which is starting in beta today, will allow people to create collaborative videos on Wikipedia and other wikis. Kaltura’s video-editing technology allows multiple people to collaborate in creating a video.

In the C-Span interview, Wales said Wikipedia has "millions" of daily global visitors and is one of the world's busiest websites. His volunteer community runs the Wikipedia operation, he said. He funds his website through a non-profit foundation and estimated a 2006 budget of "about a million dollars."
