More problematic are decisions on when critics of the Wikipedia projects should be allowed to participate in discussions or be excluded. Policies allow administrators to exclude users from on-line policy debates or votes for "behavioural reasons". Administrators maintain that they do not exclude members from discussion for reasons related to a critical policy argument. Debates continue over the best methods for resolving editing conflicts and articulating what behavior - or rhetorical style - is problematic.

Wikipedia gets massive support from the community because it’s non-profit. Google can’t compete with that, so they’re focusing on putting the authors’ names in lights and giving them a little cash on the side, too. That should help them pull some heavy Wikipedia contributors over to their project.

The concept of Wiki's collaborative projects, along with criticisms of Wikipedia, has led to the emergence of several forks and spin-offs of Wikipedia. Examples include Wikinfo, a fork created by Fred Bauder; Conservapedia, a Wiki-style encyclopedia for political conservatives; and New World Encyclopedia, an encyclopedia written by "editors with academic and literary qualifications",[17] that will launch in 2008.[18] Citizendium, an encyclopedic project established by Larry Sanger, the co-founder of Wikipedia, was originally a Wikipedia fork. Sanger has criticised numerous aspects of Wikipedia, including lack of respect for expertise and the dominance of 'difficult people' or trolls[19]. Citizendium differs primarily from Wikipedia in that it only allows users with real-name registration to edit, while giving experts in a particular field more authority regarding its content.

Iets waar Wikipedia, net zoals andere wiki's, mee te kampen heeft is vandalisme. De ervaring leert dat echte onzin (zoals "Wikpedia is een project van het NOS-journaal", "Zeekoeien zijn gek op pizza" (in een artikel over de basgitaar) of "Jantje is gek!!!!") vaak snel verwijderd wordt. Er komen geleidelijk aan steeds krachtiger hulpmiddelen beschikbaar om vandalisme te bestrijden.
