SourceWatch home page Wikipedia was the first large scale test of wiki technology for general purpose public knowledge base gathering and distribution. As of early July 2004 the English Wikipedia had more than 335,345 articles (as of August 28, 2004) and thousands of contributors. It is by far the largest wiki system. The second largest wiki is the German Wikipedia with over 132,165 articles.

The English Wikipedia is the English edition of the Wikipedia encyclopedia. Founded on 15 January 2001 and reaching two million articles by September 2007,[3] it was the first edition of Wikipedia and remains the largest, with more than three times the size of the next largest, the German Wikipedia. As of 2007, approximately one-quarter of articles in all Wikipedias belong to the English language edition, this share having gradually declined from over half in 2003, due to growth of Wikipedias in other languages.[4]
Wikipedia has more than six million articles in many languages, including more than 1.5 million articles in the English-language version and more than half a million in the German-language version. There are 250 language editions of Wikipedia, and 18 of them have more than 50,000 articles. The German-language edition has been distributed on DVD-ROM, and there have been proposals for an English DVD or print edition. Since its inception, Wikipedia has steadily risen in popularity,[2] and has spawned several sister projects. According to Alexa, Wikipedia ranks among the top fifteen most visited sites, and many of its pages have been mirrored or forked by other sites, such as Answers.com.
The German Wikipedia is set to introduce editing restrictions that may spread to other language versions if successful. This involves identifying a set of "trusted users" and allowing only their changes to be instantly visible. New contributors' work would be moderated by these users, who might be selected on the basis of how long they have been on the site and the number of their edits that have gone unreverted.[20]
The first international Wikipedia conference, Wikimania, was held in August 2005 in Frankfurt am Main, Germany. Jimbo Wales, Ward Cunningham (the inventor of wikis) and RMS gave keynote addresses. The next Wikimania conference will be held in the summer of 2006 at Harvard University in Boston.

The English Wikipedia was the first-established Wikipedia edition and has remained the largest. It has pioneered many conventions, policies and features that have been adopted by other Wikipedia editions. These include "featured articles",[5] the neutral point of view policy,[6] navigation templates,[7] sorting of short "stub" articles into sub-categories,[8] dispute resolution mechanisms such as mediation and arbitration,[9] and weekly collaborations.[10] In turn, the English Wikipedia has adopted features from the German Wikipedia, and from other smaller editions as well.
