In a contrast to the Nupedia model, in which edit privileges were difficult to come by, Wikipedia offered edit privileges by default. Administrators revoke edit privileges at their discretion based on policies, and on their opinion of content or contributors.

The Wikia creation policy states that Wikia will not be created if the content would fork the content of Wikipedia or its sister projects. However, wikis that make use of Wikipedia content in a way that Wikipedia would not allow may be permitted. Content can be shared between Wikipedia and Wikia since both are licensed under the GFDL. The project wrote its own wiki software called MediaWiki, the sort of "guts" of Wikipedia that make it a dynamic wiki capable of producing its contents through the interactions of its users. It was released under the GPL, permitting anyone to copy it and to modify it freely.
