Whois Service (KRNIC's Internet Directory) provides a way of finding e-mail addresses, postal addresses who have registered "objects" with the KRNIC. Using Whois, you can ... determine whether the domain name you desire is already in use; you can learn who administers a particular site; and you can view a list of site's name servers.

EPIC respectfully submits the following comments regarding the GNSO Whois Task Force’s “Preliminary Task Force Report on Whois Services." EPIC supports the Operational Point of Contact proposal for the removal of registrants’ contact information, namely postal addresses, phone and fax numbers and email addresses from the Whois database. The protection of individuals’ privacy further requires the removal of registrants’ names and countries of origin from the database. The Noncommercial Users Constituency similarly concludes that it is unnecessary to publish the name and jurisdiction of registrants, and EPIC supports their comments on this point.

The Task Force has issued a proposal for changing the contacts for the WHOIS service called the "Operational Point of Control" (OPoC). A second proposal addresses an approach to provide privacy in domain name registrations in special circumstances and is referred to as the "Special Circumstances Proposal." The Task Force has issued a preliminary report outlining its recommendations, and a public comment period has started. After public comments are received, the Task Force report will be finalized and sent to the GNSO Council for consideration.

The WHOIS service allows users to query a domain name to find the identity and contact details of the registrant. The public WHOIS service is a standard feature of domain name systems around the world.
