Whois: Information

Users will find that a link now sits on every Whois results page on Whois.net that offers a link to an article on Sitetiki.com. Sitetiki.com is based on the very popular open source MediaWiki application. Users of Sitetiki.com can register and modify the web page information on the site.

Obsolescence: most of the information stored in a WHOIS server, is subject to change later in time. For instance, the owner may change his (geographical) address. Since the email address used to administrate the domain often remains valid, the owner may not bother to update his address with the registrar.
A committee of ICANN has decided to leave the WHOIS database as it is, at least for now. The committee, which has been discussing changes to the WHOIS database for seven years, voted 17-7 yesterday to continue studying the issue. The committee, called the Generic Names Supporting Organization... voted 17-7 against a proposal that would have allowed "natural persons," people who register domain names for purposes other than conducting business over the Internet, to list the contact information of designated third parties in the WHOIS database, rather than their own.

Presently ICANN is undertaking a study to determine the uses and abuses of whois information. Other studies that are ongoing concern the accuracy of whois information, and the effectiveness of the processes for reporting inaccurate public whois information.
