Default servers, that assumed to have the whois daemon and databases are ARIN, RIPE, APNIC and InterNic (Network Solutions). Info from that databases may be retrieved in automatic mode. Other databases require to be included in list (just use "more" selection).

Confusion abounds about the relationship between routing registries and the ARIN whois database. Therefore it is important to mention that though routing registries and the ARIN whois database contain similar information, they are in fact distinct. Both databases can be queried using the UNIX whois command.

The records of each of these registries are cross-referenced, so that a query to ARIN for a record which belongs to RIPE will return a placeholder pointing to the RIPE whois server. This lets the whois user making the query know that the detailed information resides on the RIPE server.
