Whistling Straits: Pga Championship
built 281 days ago
Lee says - and Swift concurs - that the biggest challenge Whistling Straits faces is getting the fairways looking like the ones golfers see in Britain's Open Championship. Fescues grow most energetically in sandy soils, a stark contrast to the clay soils of Wisconsin's farmland. Lee says the course has added more than 200 truckloads of topdressing sand since it opened in 1998 to change the soil profile. To date, only the fifth fairway completely satisfies Swift.

Whistling Straits is home to two golf courses in Kohler, Wisc.: The Straits Course and the Irish Course. Both courses are Pete Dye designs, owned by the Kohler Company and part of the famed The American Club resort (along with two more Dye courses at Blackwolf Run). In 2000, just two years after opening, the Straits Course was selected as the site of the 2004 PGA Championship. The Straits Course features rugged, windswept terrain along the shore of Lake Michigan. The lake is visible from every hole on the course, and the course plays along two miles of shoreline. The Scottish links-inspired course features more than 1,000 sand bunkers.

Whistling Straits hired Swift as an assistant on the Straits Course, but quickly moved him to grow in the Irish Course in 1999, an experience he says taught him what it takes to run his own course. Then, when the PGA of America awarded the Straits Course the 2004 Championship, Swift returned to prepare it for its debut on the international stage. When he worked at the Irish Course, he called home and rounded up two of his closest friends from his hometown to join his staff. Four followed him over the next three years. They're all young and hungry, like Swift himself, and look forward to hosting the tournament.

The Straits Course is the flagship course at Whistling Straits. It has a length of 7,514 yards and a par of 72. It hosted the 86th PGA Championship in August 2004, and was host to the 2007 U.S. Senior Open. In January 2005, the Straits Course was announced as the site for the PGA Championships in 2010 and 2015, as well as the 2020 Ryder Cup.

Whistling Straits has been selected to host the 2010 and 2015 PGA Championship. The much-heralded course in Kohler, Wis., replaces Sahalee Country Club in Redmond, Wash., as the site of the event in 2010. The PGA of America recently dropped Sahalee due to concerns about the loss of corporate sponsorships from the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver and Whistler, B.C.
