Whips: People

The Kangaroo hide whips are more expensive. A lot of people ask, why? Kangaroo leather is soft, strong and very resilient. It is ... much thinner than cowhide, therefore many more strands are required to get the same thickness of a standard 4 plait cowhide whip. The Kangaroo whips can be made up of 20 plaited strands, but the most popular is 12 plait. The effect is the same as holding four match sticks.

At one time, the English whip making industry produced the finest whips in the world. Many people still feel that the work of the best Victorian whip makers has never been surpassed. In their heyday, there were possibly no more than ten makers producing very high quality whips; and today, the professional British whip maker has almost become a thing of the past. Those companies that survived the 20th Century make mass produced equestrian whips and - whilst one or two craftsmen still make very nice hunting and driving whips - I think it is correct to say that I am the only full time whip maker working in the UK who specialises in producing hand-crafted crack-able whips such as bull whips, snake whips and signal whips.

Buggy whips are not entirely gone. A resurgence of interest in the international sport of combined driving and historical carriage driving, sports enjoyed by people of all ages, has allowed some buggy whip manufacturers to stay in business, serving this specialty niche market. Foremost among these is a company in Westfield, Massachusetts.
