Whales (Ecotourism): Monterey Bay
built 803 days ago
The central California population of Humpback Whales migrates from their winter calving and mating areas off Mexico to their summer and fall feeding areas off coastal California. Humpback Whales occur in Monterey Bay from late April to early December. During this period the whales are here to feed on anchovies, sardines, and krill.

Each whale watching tour will not only provide the opportunity to view whales, but will point out other wildlife along the way. Tours will often travel past small islands occupied by rare migrating birds such as phalarops, storm petrels, shearwaters, puffins and more. The Bay of Fundy is ... the best place in the world to see harbour porpoises.

The displays are spectacular. You can see the opportunities on Hervey Bay Whaling Calendar, which only shows live whales breaching and generally showing interest in the boats which take you out to see them [unlike Japanese calendars which show dead whales and whale meat meals].
Fin Whale from Pink Lady II In Newfoundland , pilot whales have been seen hunting in groups to help concentrate their prey. One pod was observed entering a bay in a line, slowly closing the line into a circle, and trapping the prey in the center. Powerful high-pitched whistles appear to be involved in coordinating this activity.

Many Bay Area families spent Memorial Day on whale-watching expeditions, tracking the marine mammals' trip downstream and scrambling to find safe spots for viewing the whales. About 50 people gathered under the Benicia Bridge, watching through binoculars at the whales some 2 in the distance, before State Police shooed everyone away.
