Whales (Ecotourism): Fish
built 803 days ago
Word spread quickly among the local fishermen in their village that the whales were no longer unfriendly toward humans. Francisco’s peaceful encounter with the whale encouraged others to try to pet whales as well, including many enthusiastic scientists. Within a few years, the ‘sleepy fishing village’ outside of San Ignacio became world famous as a place where humans could go to make direct contact with gray whales. In the 33 years since that time, whale watching has become a popular pastime for tourists, scientists, fishermen, environmentalists and locals alike.

Humpback whales have been known to breach more than 200 times in a single display. Scientists are still not entirely certain why whales breach, although there are numerous possible explanations: it may be a courtship display, a form of signalling, a way to herd fish or dislodge parasites, a show of strength or a challenge, or simply a form of play.
Killer whales use ‘echo-location’ to locate and capture prey. Killer whales produce and emit a rapid sequence of sound pulses that bounce off objects (eg: fish, rocks, other whales, etc.), enabling them to find and catch prey, even in the dark.
