Whales (Ecotourism): Feeding
built 803 days ago
Larger whales normally propel at least two-thirds of their bodies into the air, and then land in a belly flop, or turn to one side or onto their backs. Some ... perform 'head-slaps', which resemble breaches but involve lifting only the head and top part of the body.

Some baleen whales can dive to 350 m and stay submerged for about 20 minutes. Since most of the feed the baleen whales are after occurs near the surface, they probably do not need to go that deep.

Inhumane killing: many people consider that the method of slaughtering whales is extremely cruel. Although whaling fleets may be highly sophisticated, equipped with sonar, helicopters, long-range explosive harpoons and factory ships, the actual kill is barbaric. The whale is killed by a 90kg, 2 metre-long iron harpoon, shot from a 90mm cannon. The harpoon head contains a time-fuse grenade which, literally, blows the whale's insides apart seconds after impact. This does not usually kill the whale immediately and it may suffer for hours before finally dying.

*** Female right whales have a very strong protective maternal instinct. This was taken advantage of by early whalers, who captured the calf first, knowing that the mother was then unlikely to escape.

Not many humans have witnessed or recorded (accurately) the actual birth of a humpback whale or for that matter - two whales mating. It's hard to believe these 45-ft., 40-ton creatures can "hide" anything, but that's what makes the nature of whales so fascinating.
