Whales (Ecotourism): Bering Sea
built 804 days ago
Female whales reach sexual maturity between 6 and 11 years old. Pregnancies usually last about a year and rarely is more than one calf born in a season. Though whale calves can swim at or soon after birth, mother whales protect and feed them for up to 12 months. At birth, the young calves are frequently mottled in color and have a sparse covering of hair which they lose as adults. A typical whale's lifespan is between 20 and 40 years though some may live to be 80.

Towing your own boat down to the lagoons in order to see the whales would be a waste of time, as only registered motor boats with trained guides may be used for whale watching. Also, sea kayaking is not permitted during the whale migration in either Laguna Ojo de Liebre or in Laguna San Ignacio.

From the coast, you may see winter whales, and year-round colonies of seals, dolphins, sea lions and penguins. Kangaroos can be found in many of the parks and even seen grazing like sheep in the paddocks on the fringe of towns.

During the late summer and early autumn whales swim close to the coast and are sometimes seen in the harbours. But of course the best way to spot these huge mammals is at sea. Whale-watching tours are offered in several towns in Greenland. When you sail along the coast on a passenger ship, the captain will often notify you when whales are close.

[T]hen, about 3:30 p.m. Monday, the whales' seaward progress ended abruptly as they turned back before reaching the Benicia Bridge, that was humming with holiday traffic. Rescuers feared the whales were reluctant to get too close to the noisy span. A spokesman for the Coast Guard said it appeared the whales went under the bridge earlier in the day and then retreated.
